An experiment by two psychologists, Michael McCollough of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and Robert Emmons of the University of California at Davis, wrote an article about an experiment that they had conducted. Several hundred people were split into three different groups and all were asked to keep a daily dairy.
Group one was told to keep a diary of events that occurred during the day, without being told what to specifically write about, either good or bad.
Group two was told to record only the unpleasant events that occurred during the day.
Group three was instructed to make a daily list of things they were grateful for.
The results showed that group three, who recorded things they were grateful for, increased their happiness levels-their happiness set point-by 25%.
